You know what inspired this piece? Not so long ago I saw a clip of a prominent South African Hip Hop producer talking about how bars aren’t what’s hot right now. You know, it was disappointing because this is a very talented producer. At the same time I wasn’t surprised. The North has always been open to accepting mediocrity. Luckily we don’t dabble in funny energy this side.

Hip Hop has always been competitive. That’s why Rap Beef has always been glorified and studied intensely. It has always been noted as historical events in the genre’s history. Now imagine in those moments someone came out and said “The mami’s ain’t feeling the bars homie”. Yeaaaah. Imagine Nas cooking Ether and his producer says he has to water down the bars cause the baddies are nervous? Come on. Let’s be real. Let’s rather say things like “We need to work on our balance”. Like how 50 made “Wankster”. It wasn’t as aggressive as Ether but he didn’t compromise on the bars. Now in South Africa we always want the cop out. We need to slow that down man. You always have to be surgical with this. Stay murderous with the pen.

I raise you SK Supreme and RVGGA on Daylight Marauders. Hip Hop is a combat sport. Artistic UFC. An intelligent movement. You don’t have to be super technical ALL the time. But keep it classy and clean when you write. Stay murdering the 16s. Mzingeli Montana (SK Supreme) and RVGGA were exchanging bars here. A traditional exchange at that. Look at this water.

  1. “Look at the black on me like it’s nightfall, RVGGA is god body and that ain’t a metaphor”
  2. “Your shawty a fan of the aura my n*gga, I set the piece and I’m straight in the paint I’m tryna go vegan I’m stuck on the cake

I just want to say it like the Kings on the joint. Stay Hazardous, stay skillful. We cannot go down as the generation that killed Hip Hop. Imagine, fresh from the 50th anniversary. We can’t let Nas down.

Bless.
