Prequel
Term: Average Joe
Cambridge University Definition: “An Ordinary, Typical Person”
Term: MC (Master of Ceremonies)
Urban Dictionary Definition: “The MC/Emcee is often associated with traditional aspects of Hip-Hop which connect to DJing, Graffiti, and Breakdancing, the other three root elements of the culture. Meanwhile, the rapper is generally viewed as more aligned with the trends and demands of mainstream popular culture.”
Breaking down the name, JoeDaMC?
Joe The MC
It’s an antonym really. A down play. JoeDaMc is everything but just your regular MC.
Bars? Elite. Concept Execution? Neat. Musical Element? Clean. Authenticity? Pure Water.
The Collective Wave dwells a lot on authenticity. We speak about extended metaphors like “Pure Water” and “Stay Wavy”. We believe in the core Hip Hop principles of community, being real and remaining pure to the art. With all that encompassed. Joe ain’t your regular degular MC getting by on your playlist.
You know when a child covers their ears and says/sings/screams/ “Lalalala”. That’s my perspective on this title. We’re tired of the cap in the raps. I personally don’t believe in the concept of “fake it till you make it.”
Or the new term “rap cap”. Stop stretching the truth in your art. You don’t drive a foreign. You’re not in designer. You’re not on a “PJ” (Private Jet). Why put it in the art?
People know you. Bagibela nawe. They know you at SportScene just like them. They know the real you. You’d probably attract them quicker through authenticity than through studio fantasy. I like JoeDaMc’s take on this. Let’s work through the bars.
“The Rap Game Is Either Foul Or Niggaz Straight Cappin… No Facts,
Like A Cheaters Vow”.
There’s no need for me to knit pick examples. Let’s keep it clean Kings and Queens. Attain the skill and they’ll be no reason to lie.
JoeDaMc keeps it factual without losing the energy in his art
“I Don’t Know Thug Life, Grateful I’ve Seen Better/
Eat The Beat and Ima Need A Meal After”.
Look how effortless this was. Look how it comes off top shelf without sounding less cool or less “saucy”. If you neat? You can talk about anything. Sadly as I analyse the average Hip Hop consumer in South Africa. To paraphrase JoeDaMc “anigcwali nina” Eugene Khoza recently spoke at length about this. Outside Hip Hop? We’re into wack things. We know everything about nothing.
Unlike an arm chair analyst. The Collective Wave will unearth real things till that’s the new wave.
God Speed
